Asian Art Newspaper_online, 10 Jan 2014, Zhang Enli 'The Box' at Hauser & Wirth in London
2014-01-22 16:20

Hauser & Wirth London presents the work of Chinese artist Zhang Enli, in ‘The Box’ – his second exhibition with the gallery. On show will be a sculptural installation – ‘The Box’ – the first one ever created by Zhang. The interior of this custom-made box will feature a ‘Space Painting’-style work. In his recent solo show at the ICA Zhang exhibited his first ‘Space Painting’ in London – a work made directly onto the walls of the gallery.

Also on display at the Hauser & Wirth show will be a number of his canvas paintings. Everyday items such as a marble from the studio floor and mundane materials including string are the favoured subject matter of the Shanghai-based artist; but evidence of a thoughtful, more traditionally Chinese style of painting is discernable in his work. Often employing a muted palette, Zhang’s diluted paint takes on the consistency of a glaze and his fluid brushwork reveals drawn grids underpinning the paintings. Choosing to work from memories, sketches and photographs of objects rather than from direct observation, Zhang’s work is personal and engaging.

Born in 1965 in Jilin, China, Zhang studied at the Arts & Design Institute of Wuxi Technical University before moving to teach at Donghua University in Shanghai until 2008. Since then his work has been exhibited internationally at galleries including Kunsthalle Bern in Switzerland and Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai.

Until 1 March, Hauser & Wirth London, South Gallery, 23 Savile Row W1S 2ET,
