Shanghai Longtangs-Solo Show by Hu Yang

September 5 – October 15, 2008

In the 1980’s Hu Yang started wandering along the streets in Shanghai, especially the Longtang (lanes of traditional Shanghai style). Here, the way of life has changed dramatically.

The Longtang, the most common style of local residence in Shanghai, however, have almost disappeared. One critical characteristic of living in the Longtang is that there is no clear-cut boundary between public and private space. When air-conditioning, refrigerator, and television set are not available or affordable, and when cooking and watering facilities have to be shared, many daily activities of the residents, including doing laundry, cooking, brushing teeth, washing their face and even taking shower, are necessarily conduced in the shared space of the Longtang. And because the houses are very small, many family activities such as having meals taking naps, reading and playing chess are moved from indoors to the street. The specific material condition has profoundly shaped the manners, life styles and cultural habits of people living in the Longtang. In contrast to lives in the modern apartment buildings, those of the Longtang are far more transparent with very limited privacy: personal activities and family affairs are much more revealing to the sights of neighbors who are, in general, more familiar with and more intimately involved with each other.

There are neither worship for modern life, nor emotional reminiscence of time. What we seen in Hu Yang’s work are merely an outdated invitation, or a trip to the past.

ShanghART Videotheque

ShanghART Gallery is pleased to announce the release of ShanghART Videotheque with more than 200 works.

The Videotheque offers a platform for visitors to view the artists’ work in video art and film. The archive features Chinese video & film art produced since the beginning of the 90’s up until today. The selection ranges from canonical works like Yang Fudong’s Seven Intellectuals In Bamboo Forest I-V cycle to newly produced experimental films by young and up-coming artists. Works include feature-length 35 mm films transferred to DVD, video documentations of performances, animations, and short films.

A full catalogue including brief descriptions of the various films available to view can be found at the Videotheque desk at ShanghART’s galleries in Shanghai and Beijing. Also a pdf of the Videotheque catalogue will be available for download at www.shanghartgallery.com

Screening time can be booked in advance, and monitors are provided for individual viewings.

The latest series of artworks by Wang Youshen continue the particular concept and technique of ‘Washing’. After ‘washing’, the photographs are recomposed and given a new structure and definition. Therefore, the content of the photographs are explained in new details and new perspectives. The ‘Washing’ itself can be comprehended as the symptom of abreacting emotions and fading memories, or a kind of suspicion or even denial on the reflection of the reality. Additionally, the readability of the photography is endued with deeper and broader meanings.

Wang Youshen was born in Beijing in 1964. He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, and now lives and works in Beijing. In July of 2008,Shanghart gallery invites several distinguished artists including LI Shan, GENG Jianyi, ZHOU Tiehai, YU Youhan, PU Jie, WU Yiming to prepare a banquet for eyesight for all of you.

We talk about two of the artists as follows. In terms of time, Li Shan is one of the earliest artists that initially considered the relationship between genes, biological variation and art. Through the descriptions of monstrosity in variation, he expresses his uneasiness to the unknown and creates a tense atmosphere close to madness.

Ding Yi applies basic and primary elements to develop various changes in iteration and principle. His choices of colors are diverse, ranging from quasi-monochrome to the most unexpected combination of tones, creating constantly oscillating impulses on our retinas and therefore highly pleasing perceptual effects.

Contemporary art has a huge communication space, so we sincerely hope you will get rich and subtle interaction with the works.

ShanghART Gallery is pleased to announce ‘Landscape’ – a solo-exhibition by the artists collective Birdhead in F-Space, a space dedicated to young artists.

‘Landscape’ consists of 5 different platforms that are dedicated to the imagery of Shanghai: Here, the city is captured photographically in a both poetic and realistic form of aesthetic. The show consists of tableaus that each tells a different story about contemporary life in this fast changing urban environment. The artists themselves call this approach ‘memory creation’. The images of the city come to symbolize the characters that inhabit it.

The exhibition features video as well as original photographs.

Ji Weiyu (1980) and Song Tao (1979) were both born in Shanghai where the artists today also reside and work. The artists graduated from the Shanghai Arts and Carafts School (2000). Recent exhibitions include The World of Other’s, Museum of Contemporary Art, Shanghai (2008), China Power Station II, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo, Norway (2007), Bird Head 2006-2007 Photography Show, BizArt Art Center, Shanghai, China (2007), and Individual Position II, ShanghART H-Space, Shanghai, China (2007).

After first successful exhibition at ShanghART H-Space in 2005, Hu Yang’s intensive documentation on life in Shanghai’s homes is on view again at Wu Jiao Chang 800 Art Space.

The featured photographs take on an anthropological and sociological approach that attempts to describe the dramatic changes of domestic living that occurred following the process of modernization and the Open Door policy. The photographs work as cultural documents as well as aesthetic objects that give us an almost voyeuristic view into a group of diverse private spheres ranging from migrant worker’s dwellings to the domiciles of foreign diplomats and successful business people. The photographs are contextualized with captions that quote inhabitants from conversations with the photographer prior to the shoot. Meanwhile, this complete series of the work now is in the "Collection of the Queensland Art Gallery".

For this exhibition, the original set of 100 photos has been extended by 20 additional photos.

ShanghART Gallery is pleased to present Zhang Enli Solo Exhibition with new paintings from 2007 and 2008.

The positioning and depiction of modest everyday objects in Zhang Enli’s work extend to an extremely perceptive take on presence: The artist points out and emphasizes the ubiquitous and immediate surroundings. Offering little in the way of narrative and solace, the works are fascinating but can be difficult to approach. These simple portraits of commonplace interiors refuse easy engagement. The works have intentionally been stripped off all explanatory contexts. What Zhang Enli shows us is the humble acknowledgment of ’things in themselves’ as the ultimate constituent of reality. However, following Kant’s famous doctrine, we can never perceive ’things in themselves’ directly. We can only perceive their appearance. The strength of his paintings is cumulative in effect; viewed together their meaning grows in comprehensibility. The artist focuses on singular objects that almost always seem to develop into entire series of closely observed common things like cardboard boxes, furniture pieces, lighting devices, lavatories, and buckets. The works are clearly analytical, as much in the way they are executed, as in the way they are perceived.

Zhang Enli portraits every detail and gesture of everyday objects that often seem down-played or neglected in conventional painting. His brushstrokes almost comes close to traditional Chinese ink painting where every stroke on the canvas articulates details that are significant to the whole. The transparent application of paint, and the immediacy of his gesture, are contrasted to the meticulously planning and inquiry that foregrounds every new series of paintings.

Zhang Enli was born in Jilin province in 1965. He graduated from Wuxi Technical University, Arts and Design Institute in 1989. Now he lives and works in Shanghai. ShanghART is proud to present a solo-exhibition with a new six-channel video installation East of Que Village by Yang Fudong.

East of Que Village (2007) evolves around an untamed pack of dogs, fighting to survive at the most basic level of existence, in an arid, desolate, and unforgiving expanse of northern Chinese landscape. A handful of humans also appear, engaged in their own dogged battle for survival. The work questions the value of life in contemporary China, and the desires an individual has a right to expect from his or her existence. It is perhaps Fudong’s most personal film to date, drawing on the bitter and cold feelings that he associates with the rural China of his childhood, and which embody for him a sense of isolation and loss that is increasingly present within society.

Yang Fudong’s works investigate the structure and formation of identity through myth, personal memory and lived experience. Each of his works is a dramatic existential experience and a challenge to take on. His work is open-ended and inconclusive, therefore open to individual interpretation. Each film and video is about the human condition.

Yang Fudong was born in 1971 in Beijing. He trained as a painter in China Academy of Fine Arts in Hangzhou. Starting in the late 1990’s Yang Fudong embarked on a career in the mediums of film and video. He is among the most successful and influential young Chinese artists today.

Yang Fudong participated twice at the Venice Biennale (2003/2007), First Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2005), 1st International Sharjah Biennale (2005), 1st Prague Biennale (2003) and 5th Shanghai Biennale (2004), The 5th AsiaPacific Triennial of Contmeporary Art (2006). He has had solo-shows at most acclaimed institutions such as Kunsthalle Wien (2005), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam, 2005), Castello di Rivoli (Torino, 2005), The Moore Space (Miami, 2003), and ARC/Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (2003).

The first ’BANDI PANDA’ shop will be officially opened on June 22nd, 2008 in 798 Art District, Beijing. There will be a small reception held to celebrate for the new brand launch.

Followed up to his ’BANDI PANDA’ fashion show during China International Fashion Week which triggered ’fashion earthquake’ in China, Artist Zhao Bandi is now involved in the field of fashion and will meet fashion consumers with his own products. It is a great pleasure to be able to present Zhu Jia’s first exhibition at ShanghART Gallery.

The show will feature video works showing the artist’s continuous experimentation and development within this medium, including his newest three-channel video-installation ‘We are Perfect’ (2008). In this, close-ups of expression-less, but immaculate, faces are shown continuously, starring back at the audience from three large screens. The projections directly create an immediate and unsettling impact, and one might ask ‘Who is starring at who?’ Being confronted by these enlarged facial features, questions regarding the title itself may also arise: Who is perfect? What is perfection? Is it a question of physicality, spirit, or imagination? Perhaps the artist is merely yearning over the ‘perfect’ heroism of the past. The ambiguous approach to perfectionism is a theme often found in Zhu Jia’s previous work.

The latest work continues Zhu Jia’s usual style, which contain a particular interest and focus on the inter-action between the audience and the image, i.e. between the viewer and the viewed. Zhu Jia’s previous works include ‘Forever’ (1994), ‘Did they have sex?’ (1995), ‘Repeat on purpose’ (1996), ‘Related to environment’ (1997), ‘Never take off’ (2002), and ‘New land’ (2005). As one of the most interesting of the Chinese video artists, Zhu Jia’s videos and photography focus on depicting and distorting images of humans, everyday realities and environments

Zhu Jia was born in 1963 in Beijing, and graduated from China Central Academy of Fine Arts - Oil Painting Department in 1988. He lives and works in Beijing now. He has exhibited at many major art institutions, such as National Art Museum of China (Beijing), Duolun Museum of Modern Art (Shanghai), National Museum of Contemporary Art (Seoul, Korea), Museo Colecciones ICO (Madrid, Spain), Netherlands fotomuseum (The Netherlands), La Parvis centre d’art contemporain (Pau, France), 50^th International Art Exhibition Venice Biennale (Venice, Italy), The museum of modern art (MOMA, New York, U.S.A), The Photographers’ Gallery and Asia House (London, U.K.).
